Industrialist and philanthropist Henry Ford, born July 30, 1863, grew up on a farm in what is now Dearborn, Michigan. Mechanically inclined from an early age, he worked in Detroit machine shops as a young man and became an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company in 1891. Henry and Clara Jane Bryant, married in 1888, had one child, Edsel, born in 1893. Henry Ford & Son, Ltd. was incorporated on April 17, 1917 with a capitol of 100,000 pounds and stock shares equally divided between Henry, Clara, and Edsel Ford. The purpose of the corporation was to build tractors in Cork, Ireland for the British. When German airplanes started bombing London, England no longer wanted to produce tractors in Ireland, but focused on aircraft manufacturing instead.
